In the novel Catcher in the Rye, by J.D. Saligner, Holden Caulfield is a phony. He criticizes many people on their actions, behaviors, and even looks but he fails to realize that he is just like them. Not only did he fail to realize he is a phony, he failed to notice that he was a hypocritical person. Many times, he criticizes a person for their actions, when he can relate on doing something very similar. The biggest characteristic that makes him a phony is that he is a liar. He often lies to get out of reality, trouble and truth. Throughout the story, he lies to many people so he can either talk to them, or make them go away. Holden Caulfield has all the characteristics to make him a phony, and he displays them throughout the story.

February 5 — identify three main body topics

Your three main body topics are the main topics you will use to defend your thesis.
You should use at least three different subtopics (main bodies) to defend your thesis in the paper.

Throughout the story, the reader will read in almost every page about Holden criticizing another person. Sensitive and perceptive as Holden is, he is still an adolescent and so an immature judge of adult life. As Holden said in chapter 8, "Her son was doubtless the biggest bastard that ever went to Pency, in the whole crumby history of the place." Holden is quick to pass strong perspectives on others but he does not realize that many of his judgments on one person will be similar to a judgment he made on another person. Which displays Holden’s immatureness, and phoniness. He is quick to criticize a person for any reason. Holden admits to this when he says in chapter 15, “I can even get to hate somebody, just looking at them.” This describes the problems Holden is facing upon himself. No matter what the person is doing, Holden will find a way to criticize them, “you could tell they all wanted to go to the movies, I couldn’t stand looking at them.” He may be criticizing the “phonies” but Holden doesn’t realize that it is him who is turning into a phony by strongly disliking, and criticizing people, many who he does not know. “Holden’s viewpoint is as limited as that of Hazlitt's young man who thinks that he will never die.”

Holden is a hypocritical person; many times he will criticize a person when he has had the same experience. Holden will frequently act as the same way he criticized about a person. “In a similar fashion he passes harsh verdicts on people who do not measure up to his standards of taste and urban sophistication.” Many times he will criticize a person because they do not measure up to his standards, when he also does not measure up to other people’s standards. "They got a bang out of things, though in a half assed way, of course." Holden also got a “bang” out of things but he fails to notice the fact that he himself is the same way. What disturb Holden about the world in which he finds himself are adults and adult values. His immatureness plays in as a big factor because he fails to notice and act like a young adult. He complains, and criticizes other people for acting like a phony, when his immatureness proves that he is a phony. “You never saw so many phonies in all your life, everybody smoking their ears off and talking about the play so that everybody could hear and know how sharp they were” “He was with some gorgeous blonde, and the two of them were trying to be very blasé and all, like as if he didn’t even know people were looking at him, modest as hell, I got a big bang out of it.” After Holden says phonies get big bang out of things, he tells the readers that he got a big bang out of watching the two actors. Readers find out very early that Holden is a very hypocritical person, and he fails to realize it, even through the end. Holden's disturbance was taken to be both his unique, personal gift and the fault of a hypocritical, uncaring society, one particularly indifferent to its more sensitive souls.”

The biggest characteristic that makes Holden Caulfield a phony is that he is a liar. “I’m a very good liar.” The fact that Holden admits, and knows that he is a good liar is the biggest problem. Whenever he is in trouble, or in a situation that does not favor him, he will lie and avoid the situation. He is also afraid to tell the truth or admit to the truth. He will always lie for his advantage. "Then I started reading this timetable I had in my pocket, just to stop lying. Once i get started I can go on for hours if I feel like it." He can criticize, and complain about the “phonies” but many times, he will just lie to the “phonies” so he doesn’t look like a phony. But in all, Holden Caulfield is a phony. “His mental breakdown is a direct result of his inability to come to terms with adult reality.” “Holden’s psychologically disturbed state has been advanced as the source both of his insight and of his lack of insight.”

At many times Holden is immature. He fails to react or even think like an adult in “pressured” situations. If the outcome is not what he wanted, he will quickly come up with an excuse or criticism to make it seem so that it was not his fault of any kind. “Holden’s viewpoint is as limited as that of Hazlitt's young man who thinks that he will never die.” Many of Holden’s comments are complaints, complaints about the world not being “perfect” as he wants it to be. His criticism can be viewed as a way of Holden expressing his upset feelings.

Truth is something Holden cannot face or stand up to in the story. When his teacher implies to him that he is riding for a terrible fall, Holden says he understands when he clearly does not. He does not realize that his life is filled with phoniness, immatureness, and characteristics which all measures into Holden’s life being a mess. “His mental breakdown is a direct result of his inability to come to terms with adult reality.” “Holden’s psychologically disturbed state has been advanced as the source both of his insight and of his lack of insight.” His insights are often wrongful judgments about somebody whom he does not even know. In all, Holden lies to get out of reality, and to avoid reality of his own life.

In conclusion, readers can agree that Holden Caulfield is a phony. He criticizes many people on their actions, behaviors, and even looks but he fails to realize that he is just like them.
